Shoulder Surgery
What Causes Shoulder Pain?
Shoulder pain may originate from bone and soft tissue. Tears in the attachment points of the muscles that move the shoulder to the bone and inflammation of the soft tissue sacs called bursa around the joint can cause shoulder pain. Apart from these, pain may also be felt due to bone-related reasons. (Bone tumors, calcification, fractures, etc.) Diagnostic methods such as clinical examination, x-ray and MRI are used to find the cause of pain.
When Should Those Experiencing Shoulder Pain See a Doctor?
An orthopedist should be consulted when there is sleep-disturbing pain that worsens at night, when movement limitation occurs, and if there is accompanying neck and back pain, headache, fever, and weight loss.
How to Treat Shoulder Pain?
Treatment should be directed towards the cause of the pain. Soft tissue tears and bone-related pain are often treated surgically. Other pain complaints can be eliminated with medication and physical therapy.
Who Gets Shoulder Diseases?
Most of the pain seen in the elderly occurs as a result of tendon injuries due to wear, shoulder arthritis and inflammation of soft tissues. In young people, tendon tears and shoulder dislocations are often seen due to sports injuries.
In shoulder prostheses, all or part of the damaged shoulder is removed and a prosthetic shoulder joint is placed in its place.
Lifestyle dominated by stress, emotional tensions, physical injuries and fatigue can be seen among the reasons for experiencing stiffness and pain in the shoulders.
Based on disease history, an average shoulder tear occurs every 6 weeks. Especially at this stage, there is a healing and fusion process between tissue and bone. In order to start treatment after a shoulder muscle tear, the repair must first be expected to take hold. After a period of approximately 4-6 weeks, first passive and then active exercises are started. As recovery progresses, strengthening exercises are added to the program. Thus, the patient can return to his normal life without pain in around 8 weeks.
